We consider volunteers an important part of Storefront Academy's tight-knit community, and we offer an array of opportunities for individuals and groups to get involved:
- Assisting in our After-School Program
Storefront Academy’s after-school program runs from 3:45pm-5:45pm every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday throughout the school year, and volunteers help provide homework help as well as general literacy and math support.
- Supporting Students in our Summer Program
Storefront Academy offers a five-week long summer program, and volunteers provide critical help to support teachers and students during instructional time and while participating in enrichment activities and field trips.
- Mentoring 7th and 8th Grade Students
Working one-on-one with students, often at lunchtime, volunteers join their mentees for weekday and weekend daytrips, participate in mentoring book clubs, and take part in Storefront Academy’s annual Career Day.
- Volunteering in the Reading Room
Our reading room is critical to providing individualized academic support for every student, and is staffed entirely by graduate students and volunteers. These individuals support individual students through tutoring, work with small groups, push into classrooms, and generally support Storefront Academy's most struggling learners.
- Join our Young Professionals Committee
Join other young professionals to help fundraise and plan events to benefit Storefront Academy. YPC members also take part in field trips and other volunteering opportunities with students.

- Corporate Team Building Events
Storefront Academy Harlem has many supportive corporate partners who provide valuable volunteer support. One-time events for corporate groups can include reading to students or classes, assisting in the after-school program, chaperoning field trips, hosting all-day student events, painting school buildings and signs, and holiday-themed art projects
- Book and Toy Drives
We welcome groups to organize donation drives for new toys as holiday and end-of-year gifts for our students, and new or gently used books to supplement Storefront Academy’s classrooms and library.
- Community Service Groups
Groups from high schools, colleges and community organizations across the New York area frequently volunteer at Storefront Academy, volunteering directly with students and helping to improve school facilities.
